Five Great Tips for your Home this Fall!

1.  Windows treatments: Adding blinds or shutters cuts down on your monthly utility bill and keeps heat in your home at wintertime.  Check the calking for any potential drafts.  Adding calking is actually not that difficult, using a calking gun!  Do the treatment on a warm, dry day, which is why it’s important to do now before the rain starts!  Here’s a little ehow video to help:  Getting your home ready for fall
2. Gutters: Leaves are gonna start to fall and hopefully we’ll get some rain, so make sure you are ready to keep yours clean, or buy maintenance-free gutters.  To do their job, gutters and downspouts must be clear of leaves and debris. If they aren’t, drain outlets will dam up and rainwater will fill the gutters, overflow, and eventually pull the gutters loose. Water that pools in troughs will rot wood gutters and rust sheet-metal ones. You can hire a service to clean your gutters, but doing it yourself can save you $100 or more. Plan to clean gutters at least twice a year—more often if the roof is directly beneath trees or you live in a region with frequent storms. But only take on this task if you can work safely from a ladder or the roof. If your roof is higher than a single story, you’re better off hiring a gutter-cleaning pro.
3.  Foundation: look for these warning signs of foundation failure – fractured brick, exterior mildew, standing water, sidewalk cracks.  With winter coming, it’s a good idea to check if your foundation is in need of any repair. The soil beneath your home shrinks and swells throughout the cycles of wetness and dryness. This poses a threat to your home’s foundation. When your home starts the settlement plunge, you will notice the joints and floorboards start to make mysterious noises and creaking. The severity of the settlement is based on different factors such as how well the house was designed and constructed, and how well the soil was compacted that your foundation was going to sit on.  Go to http://www.myfoundationrepairs.com/ if you are worried about your foundation.
4.  Hot Water Heater: check for rust or consider a new energy efficient one.  When selecting a new water heater for your home, choose a water heating system that will not only provide enough hot water but also that will do so energy efficiently, saving you money. This includes considering the different types of water heaters available and determining the right size and fuel source for your home. 5. Professionally clean your carpets: Take advantage of nice weather now to have your home deep cleaned for a fresh winter!  You can hire a professional or do it yourself, but depending on how much effort and time you want to spend on your carpets, a professional might be your best option since you have to rent a wet-cleaner machine anyway.
